About

Making the invisible parts of technology make sense.

How It All Runs is an independent educational channel. It takes the technology you use every day and quietly ignore — and shows how it actually works, one clear story at a time.

Why it exists

Most explanations of technology are either a one-line metaphor that leaves you no wiser, or a textbook that assumes you already understand. How It All Runs sits in between: each episode picks one honest question — what really happens when you type a URL? how does the padlock keep your card safe? how does a message find the right phone? — and follows the real path the data takes, from the moment you tap to the moment it lands.

The goal is the click of understanding: not memorising a definition, but seeing the mechanism move.

How the videos are made

Every episode is produced with a custom, fully local pipeline — no cloud rendering services involved:

  • Animation is drawn frame by frame from a hand-authored storyboard, so the packets, routers, handshakes and caches on screen move exactly as the explanation does.
  • Narration is generated with a local, open text-to-speech engine. It is AI-generated (synthetic) audio, and that is disclosed on every platform that supports the label.
  • Assembly — frames, audio and captions — is stitched together with open-source tooling entirely on a single machine.
Every value shown on screen is fictional. IP addresses come only from documentation ranges (for example 203.0.113.42), and any card numbers, domains or names are invented examples — never real personal data.

What gets covered

Episodes are drawn from a structured library of 950 topics across 18 subject areas — networking fundamentals, DNS, transport protocols, the web and TLS, routing and the internet backbone, Wi-Fi and wireless, cellular, network security and VPNs, data centres and cloud delivery, and the wider landscape of cybersecurity products. You can browse what's already published on the episodes page.

Who runs it

How It All Runs is made and published by one person. It is not a company product and has no third-party users — it is an independent creator publishing original educational videos to the channel's own accounts on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook.
